Just after the re-establishment in 1989 the contacts with the closest neighbours - Estonian LA and Latvian LA were the beginning.

In 1992 a Commission of International Relations was established, it was headed by the President of the LLA Prof. Domas Kaunas, later - by Emilija Banionyte (president since 1995). Since 1995 the Commission is named Working Group of the International Relations (WGIL).

The main task for the members of the WGIL is to represent the LLA abroad and spread the information about Lithuanian librarianship and the LLA in the world. Earlier the Commission, later - the WGIL is responsible for the Bulletin of the LLA in the English language. Material in the Bulletin covers the most important information on the LLA and it's activities, describes all kinds of libraries in Lithuania.

WGIL also is responsible for the international co-operation of the LLA and libraries in Lithuania. As a member of IFLA the LLA participates in different international events, but usually the WGIL is responsible for the grant seeking, to enable such activities.

In 1996 two agreements of co-operation were signed: with the British Library Association and the Russian Library Association. The WGIL, together with the Working Group of Professional Development organises conferences and seminars for Lithuanian librarians, inviting lecturers from abroad.
