We all live in a changing environment, where information is perceived as defining feature of our times. Information has come to be regarded as a symbol of the age in which we live.

For the effective application of the national information system by the libraries, important moment is the education. The library education should be made close to the Western pattern. The main forms of the activities of the Working Group of Professional Development (WGPE) are:

• lectures;
• seminars;
• courses;
• training visits.

In 1997 events, organised by the WGPE were:

• Trends in the Modern Librarianship - in Visaginas, by the teachers of the Vilnius University Dr. A.Glosiene and R.Petuchovaite;
• The Internet and Universities in Vilnius University, by the teacher of Sheffield University T.Wilson;
• In co-operation with the Working Group of the International Relations a seminar for public librarians was organised.
