The working group, which deals with the topics of research and academic libraries, was established in 1995 in the LLA. The Working Group of the Research Libraries (WGRL). Activities at the group started from the big idea: to compile an index on research libraries in Lithuania. It was published at the end of 1997. WGRL initiated the meeting of research libraries to discuss the automation trends. The choise on the local system was made. WGRL also initiated the establishment of the association of academic libraries (it was also headed by Birute Butkeviciene) and high school libraries.

WGRL addressed the government of Lithuania about the salaries for librarians.
