The Library Association (LA, the Great Britain) invited Emilija Banionyte and Ruta Zirgulyte to visit libraries in the Great Britain in June, 1998. Jill Martin and Brenda Smith prepared the visit program. It was very interesting and wide. Among the topics of the program was participation at the annual conference of Scottish Library Association. It took place in Peebles town about 20 miles away from Edinburgh. The conference The Inclusive Society covered the discussions on access to the information, new technologies, and distant learning, professional qualification for librarians. In the opening speech the president of the Association Ian McGovan stressed, that the subject of the conference meets the priorities of the Government in the field of a role of a library. During the conference the exhibition of various companies took place. It was very extensive – you could choose furniture for libraries, hardware, published items. The last day of the exhibition saw the demonstration of a new modern bibliobus. The days of a conference were a 90th anniversary of the Scottish Library Association (established in 1908 in Edinburgh). The dinner for that occasion was very much impressive and nice. The conference offered nice possibilities for informal communication, new contacts. In Peebles we met the President of the LA Dr. Bob Usherwood, member of the LA board Mary Auckland, other nice people whom later we met in London. With sad feelings we had to refuse the pleasures of tourist tours in a beautiful Edinburgh. We visited the national Library of Scotland, which is one of 6 largest libraries in the Great Britain. We appreciated the visit to the department of the British Library at Boston Spa. The document delivery service, together with the reference support is very much valued by other libraries, helps to avoid duplicating the work. The department resembles to the factory, rather than to a traditional library. We enjoyed the visit to the British Library as tourists. The Central Library in Birmingham impressed with it’s size and big variety of
services: there are 1000 seats in reading rooms, 25 separate reading places, a
computerised working place is at a request. All the information service is free of charge,
but you will pay for the staff involvement. “Even a You will also find prohibition in the library – no smoking, no noise, no food, no mobile phones. The order is kept by special security service. Director Assistant Ronald Milne gave the guided tour at the Kings College Library in London. The LA organises workshops Personal Development and Interpersonal Skills. The Presentation Skills was very useful. Dr. Gill Burrington conducted it. The workshops of the same subject were started in Lithuania also. The use of the seminar was increased by the fact, that all mistakes, weak and strong points were showed. The visit to the Great Britain was a wonderful possibility to learn more about the country and the LA. We appreciated a possibility to participate in a meeting of the LA Board. The politics of the LA to stand for the professional needs of its members and libraries gave us good ideas to failure the future development of our association. |
